Priorities for Strengthening Gender Equality in Europe

Omslagsbild - Rapport

The challenges facing Europe, as highlighted in the Draghi report, underscore the need for increased economic activity by all – both women and men. Gender equality is a critical driver of economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion. With a shrinking population, an ageing society, and reduced competitiveness, it is crucial to unlock untapped potential to ensure all demographic groups contribute fully to the economy, enhancing overall growth and competitiveness in the global economy.

The number of people reaching retirement age is set to increase significantly over the coming decades. By 2070, the working-age population is expected to decline by nearly 50 million, placing additional pressure on economic and social systems. Current EU fertility rates are insufficient to replace the outgoing workers. Therefore, addressing and improving labour market participation, particularly among women, will be crucial in mitigating these issues.

Women represent the highest potential for increasing workforce participation, with the possibility of adding 17.3 million more active individuals by 2030. Unlocking this untapped potential and facilitating cross-sector mobility, particularly towards high demand sectors is key to addressing labour and skills shortages.

Priorities for Strengthening Gender Equality in Europe presents the European business community’s collective response to the challenges of gender equality – aimed at boosting competitiveness, unlocking economic potential, and fostering a more inclusive labour market.
